This week I…

Made a killer smoothie. Almond milk, frozen banana, mixed berries, chocolate protein powder, and PB2, plugged with a neon green jumbo straw for optimum slurping.

I’ve been on an odd eating schedule lately so this served as a 3 ‘o clock lunch of sorts.

I took a tip my Zen sensei, Leo Babauta, who typically eats only 2 meals a day, skipping breakfast to remember what it feels like to be hungry in the mornings.

I don’t know if this is a spiritual or practical ritual, but I like it. About half of my mornings I eat because I know I should, not because I’m hungry.

So at Leo’s recommendation, I’ve been waiting to eat breakfast until I feel hungry, which sometimes is at 8 and sometimes isn’t until noon.

In other words, I’m listening to my body and I like the way it feels.

This week I also watched Dancing with the Stars, week 2 [on Hulu].

You know how I used to be on Team Kressley? Well, now I’m on Team Lake. Go Ricky!

Shake it girl.

This week I also ate meals that mostly fell into the Paleo diet plan, meaning no grains, limited sugar and no high-fat dairy.

This breakfast was composed of kale lightly sauteed and sprinkled with lemon juice, and 2 poached eggs – 1 topped with sriracha and the other topped with beet leaf pesto.

The pesto was fabulous atop the egg, giving it a new depth of flavor. And the sriracha was tasty as well. But srircha on anything is pretty much magic.

I was in runny yolk heaven.

This week I also watched the 1st episode of New Girl with Zooey Deschanel. I liked the show! It was cute and quirky and funny just like its lead star.

My favorite part was when she was clumsily dancing around her boyfriend’s living room and accidentally knocked over a plant and sung, ‘I’ll pick that up late-errrr.”

See the clip here. It’s a riot.

Watching the show even inspired me to bust out my best Zooey D. impression.

Curly hair, bangs, big glasses and all. I followed this here hair tutorial to achieve the waves using my straightening iron. Worked out nicely, eh? Thanks, internet.

I shall be trying it again, although I don’t think Topeka’s ready for such a trend based on the looks I got at the grocery store…awkward.

This week I also finished the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. And can I just say it was fantastic?!

I got sucked in within the first 2 pages and stayed hooked right through ’til the end. I kept going back and forth between Team Peeta and Team Gale but finally found my place by the end.

I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read it, but I was very pleased with the conclusion.

Yep, it’s official. I will be one of those dorks lined up outside the movie theater in the freezing cold wearing a Hunger Games costume when it’s released next March.

I. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

This week I also downloaded a new app on my phone called Color Touch.

It lets you edit photos with an effects panel and paintbrush tool. It’s pretty rad.

All my friends better watch out because I’m about to snap pictures of them and then COLORTOUCH the poo out of their faces and there’s nothing they can do about it.

Ha.

This week I also got another job! I got hired at a local coffee shop that’s slated to open around Thanksgiving. It’s going to be awesome for 3 main reasons.

1) They roast their own beans.

2) They buy directly from farmers all over the world whom they have relationships with.

3) They’re trying new brewing methods, bringing a West Coast vibe to the Kansas plains.

I start training in 2 weeks, at which point I’ll be well on my way to barista superstar status.

I don’t know what my schedule will be yet but coupled with my other jobs doing housecleaning and childcare, it should end up keeping me busy full time!

What a blessing. Seriously. I can’t wait to start.

OK, I think that’s it. It was a busy week, could you tell?

Qs:
Are you reading anything at the moment? Any suggestions now that I’m bookless?
Zooey Deschanel: fan or no? YES. major fan.
Favorite phone app?

ciao babies. xo. dana.

    • Yes, I shall do a poached egg post : ) Promise.

  4. Congrats on the new coffee gig–what a perfect fit for you!

Pesto and sriracha are both so dang good, I think if I had them both in one dish I would explode from joy.

  5. The new job sounds fun! Coffee is my “other lover” – you could always send some beans my way! ;)
Have you read, “Created to be His Helpmeet” by Debi Pearl??

    • I’ll do what I can! If I come upon an abundance of free coffee beans I’ll have to send some your way : )

  9. I’ve been loving the New Girl. I also loved the Hunger Games too, and I was rooting for Peeta all the way! Can’t wait for the movies.

    • Me either! Wanna go see it with me?!! : ) We can wear “Team Peeta” shirts and eat a dinner of groosling and field greens before the show : )

  10. I so wish I could wait until I’m hungry to eat, but I feel so crazy busy now that whenever I actually get a chance to eat I do. Not the best plan in any way.
And do you know if The New Girl is on Hulu? I heart Zoey so freaking much.

    • YES, New Girl is on Hulu, but they shift episodes around from Hulu to Hulu PLUS so you kinda have to keep an eye on which episodes are available at different times. But right now I believe the first episode is available for viewing : )

  11. I am LOVING new girl. The part with the plant falling over was one of my favorite parts too. And I’m totally stoked for the Hunger Games movie next year. Have you heard who they’ve been casting? You can look on imbd.com for who they’ve lined up so far (I’m assuming they’ve started filming).

    • YES, I’ve already checked out the cast and can’t WAIT to see them in action in the movie. It’s going to be so rad!!

  12. That looks like an amazing smoothie!
I love poached eggs, I should try that breakfast sometime.
Congrats on the job, sounds like a great place to work :-)
I’m currently reading my first uni reading-list book! It’s called The Good Soldier and it’s an interesting read, not a light easy one but worth a go if you’re up for some serious literature.

    • Hmmm, serious literature…perhaps this winter when I have more desire for heavy reading?! Thanks for the suggestion, friend!

  13. Jane Eyre!! It is a must read!! I remember when I asked you to read it last time you were busy reading Pride and Prejudice. Jane Eyre is perfect for October! It is a little spooky.

    • FRIEND, thank you for the recommendation! I started reading Jane Eyre a while back but am feeling re-inspired to finish it. I think you’re right – It’s perfect for October!

  14. I really love your new glasses! And those curls!

    • Thanks friend! I’ve never had my curls stay so well as when I’ve used this new method with the straightening iron. It’s kind of amazing!

  15. CONGRATS on the new job! super exciting! i always wanted to work at a coffee shop, seriously! i was jealous for the few months that ryan did :)

  16. I must know… where did you get those glasses? I have been looking for some super cute ones and those would fit the bill.

Also, hooray for Hunger Games! Have you read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series? I’m on the third one now, and they are great! I am such a sucker for good trilogies.

    • I’ve heard the dragon tattoo is a bit harsh and gory. I don’t know if I’d be up for it but I’ve heard it’s really compelling writing. I do love a good trilogy, too :D

And as for my glasses, I got them at a success vision express eyeglass shop. But if you look in most eyeglass shops now, they have similar versions of this style since it’s becoming so popular. Hope that helps!!
