My Ultimate Green Smoothie.

I drink one green smoothie almost every day.
Every day except for Sundays.
And Sundays don’t count because they’re meant for coffee, donuts and pizza. And sleeping in.
Ooh, and naps. Napping is my favorite.

The reason I drink a green smoothie a day is because spinach is quite possibly the best thing you can put in your body, next to walnuts, kale and blueberries. And if I can have spinach that tastes like ice cream rather than like, well, spinach, that’s what I’ll have. And since spinach does taste like ice cream when blended into a smoothie, that’s the way I prefer it the most.

So yes, smoothies it is. Smoothies over salads any day.

I’ve tried several variations of green smoothies and my favorite one to date goes something like this.

My Ultimate Green Smoothie
originally inspired by Oh She Glows
makes 1 | vegan

1 large handful spinach
3/4 c frozen strawberries
3/4 frozen banana, torn in two
1 cup light vanilla soy milk
3/4 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 T flaxseed

Method | Place ingredients in blender, starting with strawberries then milk, flax and protein powder. And finish with spinach and bananas on the very top. Blend, blend blend away until you’ve reached smoothie bliss. Then slurp like you’ve never slurped before and never look back.

I’m telling you, never look back. Ever. Especially if granola is involved…

happy green eating. dana.

  1. I’m literally about to go make this. yummmmm thanks for posting!

  2. Gahhh, you make me wish I liked smoothies. But I never feel satisfied without something to chew. When I do drink smoothies, though, green smoothies are the only way to go.

    • Kara, I totally get what you’re saying. Oftentimes I’ll add a generous handful of granola on top OR drink smoothies with a side of toast or half a sandwich to round out the meal. Otherwise, I’ll be hungry in a couple hours!

  3. woah, excuse me dana. did you just say smoothies over salads? let’s take this outside, punk.

(just kidding. i love you. and you would totally beat me in a fist fight. but hopefully i’d be able to run away really fast.)

  4. I would have a smoothie over salad too…

I just had my first ever REAL green smoothie for lunch today. I loved it!

    • Awesome! So glad you liked it. Green smoothies are my absolute addiction right now. Picking up a bag of spinach at the store is usually the healthy highlight of my week! I can’t get enough of it in smoothies!

  5. Beauty! I haven’t had one in a while…during the summer I drank them non-stop, but I kind of lost the affinity for cold drinks come December.

    • I totally understand that but I find that if I follow it with some hot green tea, it warms me right back up!

  6. Yum! I just love smoothies. I need to try this one out! :-D

  7. Add one tablespoon of peanut butter (or less depending on your taste)…it’s life-changing!!

    • Oh dude, I KNOW! But usually if I add peanut butter I subtract the protein powder. It’s a straight up delicious swap :D

  8. Mmm I’ve been on a smoothie kick lately. Bookmarking this!

  9. Had to comment on this. Totally my fave!! This is EXACTLY (minus the flaxseed–haven’t tried that recently) what I eat for breakfast every morning. I usually add cinnamon, a sprinkling of blueberries, splenda, and natural creamy peanut butter, too. And then I eat a handful mix of walnuts, pistachios, almonds, and multi-grain cereal with amaranth and flax on the side. I look forward to breakfast every morning because of it. ;) And by the way, your original smoothie posts are what got me hooked last summer. I call mine the “Alligator” smoothie or the “Tortoise,”depending on how many blueberries I add in.

    • Ha! That’s such great news! Glad I got you into the green smoothie revolution. They’re incredible! I just had one for lunch a little while ago. They never get old!

  10. Dana! This post totally got me into the mood for a Green Monster today! Thank you :)
Now!!! You must listen to Dan Mangan’s: Et Les Mot Croisés STAT so we can bond over love of this song (and I know you have awesome music taste in the form of sufjan stevens)

    • SWeet! New music! I’ll check it out STAT. Thanks, friend!

    • Yes! My children shall be green smoothie machines! haha :D
