Chocolate Granola.

I kinda have this thing for chocolate.
Well, if I were honest, it’s more like an all-on crush.

I can’t get enough of it in every form.
Chocolate chips.
Hot chocolate.
Chocolate cake.
Chocolate squares.
And now, chocolate granola.

I tried some store bought chocolate granola recently and it was insanely delicious. In fact, I ate the whole bag in a matter of days. Whoops.

But, it cost more than $5 a bag which isn’t sustainable for me. Nobody said staying on a $200 grocery budget was easy. So, in my limbo of wanting more chocolate granola but not wanting to pay for it, I came up with a solution: make my own. How very wise of me, I do think.

Chocolate Granola

Ingredients
3 cups oats
1 cup raw almonds
2 Tablespoons oil
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4-1/3 cup honey, agave nectar or maple syrup*
1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Method | Preheat oven to 350. Mix the oats, almonds, salt, and cocoa powder in a large bowl. In a small saucepan, warm the oil, vanilla and honey and stir until incorporated.  Mix the dry and wet and spread on a cookie sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring once or twice to ensure even cooking. Cool in a bowl and then add the chocolate chips once fully cooled. Store in an airtight container to retain freshness.

*Add honey, agave, or maple syrup to desired sweetness. I stuck with 1/4 cup to keep the sugar count down, but 1/3 will give you a more decadent granola. Also, add slightly more oil if want it crispier.

Granola success! This batch definitely satisfies my chocolate craving with the cocoa-covered oats and sweet chocolate chips. Plus, it’s way healthier than anything store bought and not to mention cheaper. I think I’ve found a new granola favorite in this recipe.

I prefer mine with soy milk and sliced banana. I find it provides the right amount of sweet and creamy to make my mornings all the more enjoyable. Waking up is a little less difficult knowing this in my cereal mug.

Enjoy!

  2. Granola is one of the most pricey food items! Way to take matters into your own hands and make something delicious from scratch. I have actually (gasp) never had chocolate granola!

    • Well it’s a flavor you should definitely try! I thought I’d prefer plain jane granola but the chocolate is winning over my heart!

My Mum used to make something sort of like this for us for breakfast as kids. She would put oats, drinking chocolate and little bit of sugar in a bowl and pour milk on it. It was delicious, actually I’m salivating from the memory now….
Thanks for the updated version Dana, and for reminding me of Mum!

    • Of course! And thank you, as always, for being so sweet. Hope you enjoy this recipe, Amy!
